Partners in crime est inspiré d’un fait-divers survenu dans ma ville il y a plus de vingt ans, lorsque l’hippopotame du zoo — animal fétiche du directeur — tua ce dernier par jalousie pour un tracteur dont il venait de faire l’acquisition. Le caractère extraordinaire de ce drame me poussa à gratter le vernis de l’anecdote pour en découvrir le potentiel mythologique : et si l’histoire de cet hippopotame pouvait s’inscrire dans la lignée des récits bibliques ? S’il était une figure moderne du Léviathan ou de Béhémoth ? 


In a world of darkness and mist, a hippopotamus remembers his distant past and tells us the drama of his life.
Based on a true story.


Partners in Crime was inspired by a case that happened in my town more than twenty years ago, when the hippopotamus in the town’s zoo – the director’s favourite animal – killed him out of jealousy for a tractor he had just bought. This extraordinary tragedy prompted me to scratch beneath the surface of the anecdote to discover its mythological potential : what if the story of this hippopotamus could be related to the biblical stories ? What if it was a modern-day figure of Leviathan or Behemoth ?
